Complete focus on packet flow
NetScout is unique in the world of Packet Flow appliances and related technology. While not a widely-known name, they have been in the packet analysis business for over 20 years. A few years ago they acquired Network General, the company behind the Sniffer brand, and became the super-vendor in this market space.
Many APM vendors have a broad range of products that try to address all of the different categories of APM functions, of which packet flow is just one. They usually have one or two strong functions and a bunch of “me too” functions that they got from an acquisition a few years ago, and which are not integrated properly.
NetScout’s revenues are more than a third of a billion dollars, and by contrast they only do one thing – packet flow technology. This means that their customers benefit enormously by having the latest, optimised and integrated network-based application performance management solution on the market.
It is telling that according to research by Sevcik and Wetzel (see “Top 5 APM Vendors by Performance Results”), NetScout is the vendor most frequently used by top-performing organisations. The vendors further down the list have much greater revenues and much broader product sets (not to mention much larger marketing budgets), but it seems that the market has spoken.
